The tyres you choose for your 4WD will determine how it performs both on and off-road.

Why choose AT tyres?

When buying new tyres you must first give consideration to the type of driving you do, or intend to do. If you spend most of your days driving in the city and suburbs Monday through Friday, then hit the gravel roads and dirt tracks on the weekend - a set of All Terrains may be the perfect tyres for you.

Taking the time to consider your intended use, your budget, and speaking to the experts at Marks & Wallings will help you to find the best tyres for your 4WD.

What are AT tyres?

All Terrain (AT) tyres are versatile and reliable. They perform well across a range of terrains, including rocky environments, gravel and bitumen.

Often described as a good ‘all-rounder’, the AT is typically stronger than a Highway Terrain (HT) tyre and a better performer on-road than a Mud Terrain (MT) tyre. Their key features include:

A deeper and more aggressive tread than that of a HT tyre.

  • Benefit: provides greater grip in off-road conditions.

  • Compromise: they tend to generate more noise than an HT tyre, though there are low-noise AT tyres available in the market worth your consideration.

A thicker and stronger sidewall and tougher internal construction than an HT tyre.

  • Benefit: less susceptible to punctures and damage commonly experienced off-road, caused by hazards such as rocks, sticks and ruts. AT tyres are also more capable of carrying heavier loads and running at higher pressures.

  • Compromise: may not be as smooth-riding or sharp in its on-road performance when compared to an HT tyre.

Are all AT tyres the same?

When purchasing AT tyres it’s important to be aware that the strength, quality and tread pattern design can vary from one tyre manufacturer to another. Typically, an AT tyre has a moderate speed symbol and load index. Our knowledgeable staff are here to assist when it comes to finding an AT tyre that will meet your driving needs.

How do you know an AT tyre is right for your 4WD?

AT tyres offer good capabilities across the board.

Typically, an AT tyre is more robust than an HT tyre, which may be better suited to your intended purpose. The extra void in the tread pattern improves their grip on unsealed surfaces, making them a versatile tyre, well suited to a wide range of terrain from dry sealed roads to muddy tracks.

Though they do tend to generate more noise than a HT tyre, they still offer good ride comfort in everyday driving making them a good tyre option for the family car.
