The history of Pirelli

Pirelli dates back to 1872, founded by Giovanni Battista Pirelli in Milan. Initially, Pirelli produced elastic rubber items. Fast forward to 1901 and the production of car tyres began!

From the very beginning, Pirell had a passion and commitment to racing, and in 1907 the first car fitted with Pirelli tyres won the Grand Prix de I’ACF (Automobile Club of France).

By 1929, Pirelli had plants in Spain, England, Argentina and Brazil.

They marketed their first radial tyre from 1953 - the Cinturato. Its main feature was a sturdy belt in radial material between the carcass and the tread. It was a truly innovative tyre for its time, offering enhanced safety, performance and wear.

During the 60s and 70s Pirelli’s technological developments continued with the design of the low profile tyres. These tyres met the power requirements for cars produced by the major international car makers of the time.

Pirelli’s low profile tyres were continuously upgraded until the production of super-low tyres. The 70s also saw a big technology advance with the launch of Cinturato P6, P7 and P8.

Fast forward to 2010, and Pirelli had completed its transformation into a pure tyre company. In 2011 they became the exclusive supplier to Formula 1.
